Apprenticeships: shaping the future of automotive talent

ILC ARTICLE

Apprenticeships play a pivotal role in workforce development across the automotive sector, offering a structured, hands-on pathway for individuals to acquire industry-relevant skills and real-world experience. These programmes not only benefit the apprentices themselves but also deliver immediate and long-term value to the businesses that invest in them.

A standout example is Repairify’s recently launched Digital Technician Apprenticeship Programme, developed in partnership with QA. This initiative represents a strategic investment in the future of automotive technology by nurturing a new generation of digitally skilled professionals. By cultivating talent from within, Repairify is ensuring that its workforce remains equipped with the latest expertise to meet the rapidly evolving demands of the industry.

Through this programme, apprentices gain access to cutting-edge tools, training, and mentorship that bridge the gap between traditional mechanical skills and the digital technologies transforming the sector. From diagnostics and coding to advanced vehicle systems, the programme aligns closely with the skillsets modern technicians need.

Recently, ARC360 had the opportunity to catch up with the first cohort of apprentices enrolled in the programme.

ARC360 – How did you find out about Repairify apprenticeship programme and why did you decide to join it?

Apprentices:

Ewan Wilson – Several family members pointed me in the direction of  Repairify’s programme as it was related to what I was doing as an apprentice mechanic. For me, the reason I decided to apply was pretty simple. I felt that the programme would be an asset on my journey in the sector because what I would learn would help me down the line in my career.

Ethan Ridley – Like Ewan it was a family reference that put the programme in front of me. The reason I joined the programme was due to the fact I could see the huge prospects in the business and the fact that I am passionate about the automotive sector and working in it made it align nicely with what I want to do.

ARC360 – What do you hope to get out of the apprenticeship programme?

Ethan Ridley – The programme will help me gain life-long skills that will be an asset when it comes to my career prospects in the automotive sector.

ARC360 – What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

James Smurthwaite – Take the opportunity to join an apprenticeship programme as it will help you gain key industry qualifications and at the end there is also the potential to secure a job in a very competitive sector.

Ewan Wilson – The advice I would give is simple. Do your due diligence so you understand the industry and the specific role you’re applying for. I would also recommend researching the skills you’ll need and the career prospects the programme you apply for offers at the end of it.

ARC360 – What has been the most interesting thing you have learnt on the apprenticeship so far?

Jack Nichol – We have learnt a lot since we started, but what I have found most interesting to learn about is all the different components in the technology.

Conclusion

It’s clear that initiatives like this don’t just fill skills gaps – they shape futures. By investing in young talent today, companies like Repairify are helping to future-proof the automotive sector and secure its continued innovation and growth.
