Chinese NEVs gain ground in uk market

ILC ARTICLE

According to the latest China Watch bulletin from Gecko Risk, 255,861 Chinese-manufactured New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) are currently in operation across the country. Gecko forecasts more than 140,000 new Chinese NEV registrations in 2025.

Leading the charge is MG, which dominates the UK Chinese NEV market with 160,483 vehicles. BYD follows with 56,485, having also made notable progress in the broader battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment. BYD retained its sixth-place position for BEV registrations across the past 12 months and ranked fifth in October alone. More notably, the brand’s combined BEV and hybrid sales have surpassed Tesla’s in 2025.

Other Chinese marques establishing a presence include JAECOO (14,844), OMODA (8,491), MAXUS (7,786), and GWM (2,580), alongside emerging brands such as LEAPMOTOR and XPENG.

Trends illustrated in China Watch’s data highlight rapid growth in Chinese NEV adoption, with year-on-year registration increases since 2019. While uptake remained modest in early years, registrations exceeded 50,000 in 2024 and are projected to nearly triple in 2025, reinforcing the sector’s acceleration and growing appeal to UK consumers.

A breakdown of October’s EV market activity places BYD among the top five manufacturers, with only Ford, Audi, Volkswagen, and Renault ahead. In the 12-month rolling period, Tesla remains the UK’s top EV manufacturer, followed by Volkswagen and BMW.

The continued rise of Chinese NEVs in the UK signals a broader shift in consumer behaviour and competition within the automotive sector, particularly as manufacturers focus on sustainable mobility solutions and affordability.
