Ben, the automotive industry charity, is calling on the sector to help bring 13-year-old Dan Flemen home, as his family prepares to be featured on the BBC’s DIY SOS in July.
Dan’s life changed dramatically in November 2022 when flu-like symptoms escalated into a diagnosis of a brain tumour. Following emergency surgery, Dan suffered a stroke that left him severely disabled. He is now non-verbal, requires 24-hour care, and has been in hospital for more than two and a half years.
Dan’s mother, Julie, stays in hospital accommodation, while his father, Nigel – who works for APL Vehicle Services – and two sisters travel over 50 miles from Freckleton, Lancashire, to be by his side. The family home is currently unsuitable for Dan’s complex needs.
To bring Dan back home, vital renovations are needed, including: – A private, accessible bedroom – An adapted bathroom – Facilities for full-time care – Social space to reconnect with loved ones
Filming will take place in Freckleton from 16th-23rd July, and while DIY SOS will contribute to the renovation, the family urgently needs additional donations and volunteer support from within the automotive community.
Volunteers, especially tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, decorators and joiners, are invited to help by contacting DIYSOSPreston@southshore.uk.
Donations can be made at: www.gofundme.com/f/DanFlemen.
Nigel Flemen shared: “Dan needs to come home, where he belongs, with all of his family. We feel this would aid his recovery, mental health and quality of life.”
Ben is dedicated to supporting people across the automotive industry in times of crisis, reinforcing the belief that when one of our own needs help, the whole community pulls together.
