A significant shift in UK skills policy has been highlighted by Apprenticeship Central Ltd following the government’s recent reshuffle, with responsibility for skills now spanning both the Department for Education (DfE) and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Baroness Jacqui Smith remains in post, offering continuity of leadership, but her remit now includes oversight across both departments. The move positions skills not solely as an education issue but as a central pillar of employment, productivity, and economic growth.
In what has been described as a “major skills shake-up”, the integration of the skills brief into DWP signals a new approach. Training and apprenticeship policy will now be embedded within the broader context of jobs and welfare, aligning more directly with the labour market and future workforce needs.
This restructuring supports the delivery of reforms already underway, including the Growth and Skills Levy, the expansion of foundation apprenticeships, and the development of shorter apprenticeship pathways. These changes aim to create a more responsive and efficient system that better reflects the needs of both employers and learners.
Apprenticeship Central Ltd are apprentice recruitment and retention specialists for employers who need an outsourced solution to fulfil their recruitment and retention activities at an operational level.
