Steer Automotive Group has launched a unified training academy designed to strengthen technical skills development and support the next generation of talent across the accident repair sector.
The new Steer Training Academy brings together the existing Steer Academy and Gemini Training programme into a single employer-led learning framework serving the group’s network of more than 200 repair centres nationwide.
The initiative represents a significant investment in workforce development, with the business aiming to increase apprentice numbers from around 300 currently to more than 400 across the group.
John Henderson has been appointed Head of Technical Training & Development and will oversee a team of nine training coordinators. John previously led the Gemini training programme and has worked within the business for more than 20 years.
The academy will focus on four key areas: apprenticeships, adult learning, continuous professional development (CPD) and overall training capability. Steer said the programme has been designed to create a consistent approach to technical learning and career progression throughout the organisation.
Six apprenticeship pathways will be available covering multiskills, MET, paint, panel, cosmetic repair and vehicle damage assessment (VDA). Training will be delivered in partnership with three specialist providers operating to Steer’s standards.
Additional features include on-site mentors, a structured three-day work trial before enrolment and enhanced accreditations covering electric vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), refrigerant handling and welding where relevant.
The academy will also extend the CPD model previously trialled within Gemini across the wider group, providing technicians with access to IMI-accredited learning and structured accreditation renewal programmes.
John Henderson, Head of Technical Training & Development at Steer Automotive Group, said: “This is about more than qualifications – it’s about building a culture where technical excellence is continuous, not a one-off achievement.
“The Steer Training Academy gives us a structured, employer-led framework to develop talent from day one and maintain it throughout a career.”
Steer Automotive Group repairs more than 250,000 vehicles annually and employs over 4,500 people across the UK.
